Off Road Rules Could Affect Cabinowners

NFH LogoThe Forest Service has now finalized their off-road vehicle rules. Each Forest will now undergo a procedure to identify what kind of vehicles will be permitted on what roads and trails and during what times of the year.

The new rules reverse how the Forest Service had regulated vehicles. Instead of allowing them everywhere they are not explicitly prohibited, they will now be prohibited everywhere they are not explicitly permitted.

As a result of a lawsuit, this procedure was already underway in the Eldorado National Forest . Public input has been sought to designate all known roads. For some cabin tracts, this could mean roads that cabinowners use to get to the cabin, or roads used as a back-up escape access in case of fire, need to be on the inventory of acceptable roads, at least for those purposes.
